Blog

Dear Art Friends,

This is an introduction to my art blog. I have wanted to do this for a long time because between commissions and large gallery paintings I do little oil sketches of ideas for future paintings or just small things of beauty that strike me at odd moments. Because I paint every day, after a while, these little canvases add up. So I thought I would share them with you. I will be sending them out about every week or two. If you enjoy them, please forward them to friends on your email list. If you do not want to be bothered, no problem just cancel the blog.

So, please consider joining my weekly newsletter (see link below).

Thanks, Nancy Paris Pruden

Cold In California

PAINTINGS OF INTERIORS

As crazy as it sounds, the hotter it is in the rest of the country, the colder it is in San Francisco. I am back in California, this time visiting my daughter's family in San Francisco and the fog horns are echoing through the hills. Mark Twain is quoted as saying, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." Well, for the past few days that might appear correct, but then the sun burns the fog away, and it's lovely! This chilly morning, however, I decided to set up my easel in the front window and paint the Entry Hall. The Venetian mirror and lamps were both inherited from "Mother" so the scene has sentimental value as well. This old Victorian house was subdivided some years ago and my daughter and son-in-law bought the first 2 floors as a large apartment. The diamond shape leaded glass and elaborate moldings make for a grand and elegant space but most of the house has contemporary furnishings. I think you call that eclectic and it's lovely. I don't often paint interiors but as a traditional subject matter, there is quite a following. My personal favorites are Van Gogh's bedroom and Matisse's "The Window", and many paintings by Pierre Bonnard and his friend, Edouard Vuillard. However; if you just Google "Paintings of Interiors" you will see lots more. I think I am inspired to paint more as well...maybe looking out the window at the house across the street. Hummm...

PAINTING TRIPS POSPONED, AGAIN!

I am so Bummed! My painting trips to Europe are postponed for the second summer! This is a major part of my business as I have been taking artists on painting trips every summer for over 20 years. Who knows when this pandemic will be over but keeping everyone safe continues to be the first priority. So, I guess we will roll over the deposits on the beautiful houses I have rented for yet another year. How about summer 2022? It's never too soon to plan! You can check out the information on my website under WORKSHOPS. I will probably schedule the trips for about the same time next September. Here's hoping for the best! In the mean time we can all continue to dream and remember past adventures. Check out more pictures of past trips on my website under CANDIDS. DAMN the Delta!
