Blog

Dear Art Friends,

This is an introduction to my art blog. I have wanted to do this for a long time because between commissions and large gallery paintings I do little oil sketches of ideas for future paintings or just small things of beauty that strike me at odd moments. Because I paint every day, after a while, these little canvases add up. So I thought I would share them with you. I will be sending them out about every week or two. If you enjoy them, please forward them to friends on your email list. If you do not want to be bothered, no problem just cancel the blog.

So, please consider joining my weekly newsletter (see link below).

Thanks, Nancy Paris Pruden

GREAT-GRANDMOTHER'S CHINA

Our Great-Grandmother Broeder was very proper and lived in Webster Groves, Missouri, which was a suburb of St. Louis, over 100 years ago. She had a set of Haviland Limoges china for 16, complete with butter pats and finger bowls. The set is very delicate with pink flowers on white bone china and is hopelessly out of fashion now. My mother inherited the full service and Aunt Nan was always covetous and "Hurt" she didn't inherit it instead. Naturally, none of us wants or uses it today and we probably couldn't give it away, which just goes to show how silly the whole collecting "Things" can be. Still I am dutifully storing the mountain of china in my cabinets in the hopes some of our children will want it some day. In the mean time the shape is pretty (without the flowers) so I pulled out a delicate demitasse cup to paint as part of my Première Coup project. White objects are a great way to study values and elliptical shapes are a challenge to draw so, there are quite a few lessons to be learned by painting an all white cup and saucer. And without the pink flowers it look rather contemporary! I think it would look darling in a kitchen.

PART OF A COLLECTION

Painting a series expands an idea and gives the artist a chance to explore a motif from different angles. These Three paintings below are meant to be displayed together. A friend loaned me these plaster casts of sugar confections, but I decided to arrange them on similar backgrounds to further the idea of one composition in 3 parts. If you haven't noticed, I have been painting food, mostly deserts, since before Thanksgiving. What is this about? Not sure but being isolated during this pandemic has definitely made food a major focus of my day. How about you? A friend said that he decided that the Pandemic would be a great time to lose 10 pounds and after 9 months he got on the scales and only had 21 pounds to go...EEEEEK! Oh well, at least we are still here! Let's hope we all can get the vaccine soon! Happy New Year!

THANK YOU PAINTINGS

For several years, good friends have sent me a box of grapefruit for Christmas, and not just any Grapefruit... Ruby Reds! Naturally, I continue to be thrilled as there is nothing better than a grapefruit for breakfast on a cold January morning! This year I decided to paint a "Thank You" painting as there are no more words I can say to convey my appreciation for their generous gift! As some of you may remember, I recently completed a project where I painted 30 paintings in 30 days. Funny but after 30 days anything can become a habit. Little jewels appear daily in your field of vision if you are looking, so why not stop and paint them? Particularly if your paints are set up anyway? A new positive habit for a New Year! I like the ring of that! So, Happy New Year! Let's toast good habits to cultivate in 2021 instead of just flushing stinking 2020 down the toilet. Now if I can just do the same with eating and exercise habits...
