Blog

Dear Art Friends,

This is an introduction to my art blog. I have wanted to do this for a long time because between commissions and large gallery paintings I do little oil sketches of ideas for future paintings or just small things of beauty that strike me at odd moments. Because I paint every day, after a while, these little canvases add up. So I thought I would share them with you. I will be sending them out about every week or two. If you enjoy them, please forward them to friends on your email list. If you do not want to be bothered, no problem just cancel the blog.

So, please consider joining my weekly newsletter (see link below).

Thanks, Nancy Paris Pruden

Praying Manis Blossoms

PRAYING MANTIS BLOSSOMS

Painting flowers has always been a delight for me, but recently, I decided to changed it up by painting them larger than life and as an all-over pattern, instead of placing them in a vase. I don't know, just thought it would look more Contemporary. Anyway, you can resolve the composition while you are arranging flowers, in a traditional Still Life, but in an all-over pattern you have more freedom...which can easily get you into trouble. I started off happily with the top roses and Anemones, but quickly got into difficulty half way into the painting with shapes and values. The trick is to keep the eye moving from large shapes to smaller shapes, some light, some dark, some warm, some cool. Not everyone can be a star, in life and in art. If you want to please the eye, use variation, but with some repetition. Alas, after getting into trouble, some of these flowers were repainted multiple times. Naturally, after all that suffering, I had to throw some fun into the mix! See if you can find the Praying Mantis in the bouquet. Why a Praying Mantis, you ask? Well, I just think they are elegant and exotic while actually being quite docile to humans. I had a pet Praying Mantis as a child. I think I got it at the State Fair. Anyway, they do make cute pets, that is, unless you are their mate as most females eat the male after sex. Maybe he should First bring her flowers!

GRAHAM HENRY PRUDEN

Graham Henry Pruden was born September 9, 2019 at 6:49 am, just in time for Breakfast! He weighed in at 6 lb, 13 oz., and is 20" long, but we all think he fills up the Room! The numbers 9 and 19 have always been my lucky numbers, so I might have to call him Lucky, (at least some of the time.) None the less, we all are thrilled including Big Sister, Madeline, although she continues to insist he is a Baby Sister. Janet made the whole birthing thing look easy after a morning hike and a light dinner, she went into labor at 9:00 pm and had the baby the next morning. Every one is home now in San Rafael, where Ben reports that Graham makes all sorts of little cute baby bird sounds. I was glad I was able to be there!

Sailing Beneath the Alps

SNOW ON THE PEAKS

Lake Como is quite long, stretching from the outskirts of Milan to the Switzerland border. The southern half is balmy with many mansions, but the farther North you go the breezier it gets and farms dot the hillside. Across the lake from our Villa we would see sailing regattas most days and it was not as glittery as further South. Don't get me wrong, it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, but I enjoyed not being among crowds of tourists. Really these trips are about gathering together of like minded people who enjoy Nature, good food and experiencing different cultures. I consider myself very lucky to be able to introduce new friendships, and facilitate artistic growth away from daily distractions. It was heaven to not watch the News for a solid week!

Storm Over the Alps

SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE

It came from the North, first with a subtle shift of the breeze, then a shadow crept over the front mountains but the larger mountains behind were still in sunlight. Then the wind picked up in earnest, much cooler now, and I was overcome with an awh. Nature was both frightening and inspiring. Spending time outside observing Nature became a religious experience. One we all need to understand if we are going to reverse some of the damage we have done to this planet. If we all got outside, away from our cities with their air conditioned isolation, we would cry in alarm with the changes that have happened in a few short years! It's not just some "Liberal Conspiracy", Climate change has happened and it will continue to happen FAST. Artists and scientists are not the only ones seeing it. Write to your government, protest this wanton destruction, each one us can be part of the solution, but first we need to open our eyes and squarely see what is right before us.
