Blog

Dear Art Friends,

This is an introduction to my art blog. I have wanted to do this for a long time because between commissions and large gallery paintings I do little oil sketches of ideas for future paintings or just small things of beauty that strike me at odd moments. Because I paint every day, after a while, these little canvases add up. So I thought I would share them with you. I will be sending them out about every week or two. If you enjoy them, please forward them to friends on your email list. If you do not want to be bothered, no problem just cancel the blog.

So, please consider joining my weekly newsletter (see link below).

Thanks, Nancy Paris Pruden

SHARING WITH FRIENDS

What is it about rocking chairs that make friends want to visit for hours? Hollee has 8 rocking chairs on her front porch facing the garden which is the perfect place to share memories, wisdom, and love. Through the years, at one time or another, the Painting class has gathered on that porch to contemplate Life, Art, Beauty, Sickness, and of course, Loss. Rocking is soothing, like being rocked as a baby or child with a scraped knee. As a human being, we all crave love and community. What better place to gather all these things than in a rocking chair on a front porch? Thanks, Hollee, for making it happen. Comments on the painting above.

Dega and Mary Cassatt were 2 artists who often used chairs facing with their back to the scene, as a stand-in for the artist. The idea was that the artist had just gotten up to paint the painting, and that is exactly what happened the morning I painted this garden filled with Daisys!

LONG-LASTING ART FRIENDS

Long-lasting Friendships are one of the gifts of getting older. Hollee has invited the Painting Class to her family's farm every Spring for at least 20 years. She started taking art lessons with me when her youngest went off to college. Both girls are now accomplished women with big careers, married, and with children. The old farmhouse had a major renovation recently but it still retains all the charm of its owner. In other words, it's Delightful! Normally in April, the fields are covered in Bluebonnets but this year the bluebonnets were almost gone but were replaced by this sea of yellow! Many things change but I am grateful that these friendships remain constant!

The Spring Semester for Painting classes runs weekly now through the end of June. If you would like to sign up, email me here.

LITTLE PIECES OF MYSELF

It's strange to run across old pieces of art that you did years ago on the walls of others. Forty years ago I sketched my little children at Cypress Creek and before I left I threw them in the trash. When we returned the following year they were stapled on the bathroom wall where they have remained ever since. Art, no matter what you think of it, has a way of gathering a life of its own. It's interesting to see something so personal through another's eyes. This Easter, we returned to Wimberley with grown children, grandchildren, and cousins and I was struck by how the simplest memories, like small pieces of Art, can expand into shared experiences. How lovely that we all pass on, through shared memories, little pieces of ourselves.
