Blog

Dear Art Friends,

This is an introduction to my art blog. I have wanted to do this for a long time because between commissions and large gallery paintings I do little oil sketches of ideas for future paintings or just small things of beauty that strike me at odd moments. Because I paint every day, after a while, these little canvases add up. So I thought I would share them with you. I will be sending them out about every week or two. If you enjoy them, please forward them to friends on your email list. If you do not want to be bothered, no problem just cancel the blog.

So, please consider joining my weekly newsletter (see link below).

Thanks, Nancy Paris Pruden

Out of the Heat!

Well I did it again! I managed to get out of the Texas heat this summer! First we went to Telluride for a Fabulous Wedding! Naturally I booked us to get there early so I had time to paint a few paintings. Telluride looks like The Alps and in July had this much snow on the mountains. What a great time was had by All! We hiked, laughed, ate, drank, shopped, partied, and generally enjoyed ourselves for 6 glorious days! Thank you to all our Hosts!

Sand in Oil Paint

I have been experimenting with different mediums and stumbled on this sand medium. I knew that the Mexican painters of the 1920′s-1940′s use sand in their oil paint so I wanted to try it. However; on this little oil sketch I just painted it all over the canvas and after it dried I did the painting. I noticed that the edges were softer and the paint soaked into the canvas more. Next time I will try mixing it in the paint.

This is another painting I started at my friends’ ranch in the Hill Country. I wasn’t happy with it but worked on it after I got back and I think improved it. Added the cows and it clicked!

Cool Under the Trees

It is so hot in Texas! Our friends in the Hill Country say their cattle and wild life are really suffering. Still, in Kerrville, it can be as much as 10 degrees cooler than in the rest of Texas. Our friend’s ranch also has underground springs so there are places even in this hot summer to beat the heat. Naturally this “bottom land” is exactly where the cows congregate … they’re not that stupid!

Missing Mexico

I have been going to San Miguel, Mexico for many years. My mother has lived there for over 25 years and I have been taking artists on painting trips there for 10 years. This will be the first summer I am not going. Not because I am concerned about the Drug Wars; they are no where near there and the country is huge, but because I could not get anyone to go with me. I pray this is over soon because it is killing tourism for the millions of honest , hardworking Mexicans who want to share their beautiful and culturally rich country.

This plein painting is one of many I did last summer from the top patio of my favorite rental house in San Miguel. The view is of the back of the Parroquia which is the famous cathedral in town. I decided to focus on the back because it is beautiful in it’s own right but no one remembers these buildings.I hope you like it.
