View from Aunt Martha’s Bedroom

This little painting was done on a cold windy afternoon in Art, Texas. I had painted a cow painting that morning outside but by the afternoon the wind made me retreat to the warmth of Aunt Martha’ old farm house. As I wandered through the empty rooms I spied this scene out of the front bedroom window. Eureka! A charming view of the old Methodist church seen through the comfort of the house window! Then the same cows wandered over to that pasture and I was set.

Friend’s Family Farm

This Spring, while the wildflowers were still wildly blooming, a friend graciously offered a place to paint at their families’ farm near Bellville, Texas. I drove up one Saturday morning hoping I had written the directions correctly because no one was to be there that morning. After turning off the highway I drove for a long way on a dirt road through a dense forest. The longer I drove the more anxious I became. ( I am not that great about dirrections.) Then, all of a sudden, I burst out of the forest on this lovely view. I felt like I was in a Fairy Tale! Bella Bellview!

More Houston Arboretum

This week we moved into the forest at the Arboretum which is quite dense and surprisingly cool. Welcome relief! My focal for this painting is the dappled light falling on the log in the clearing. I am afraid my days are now numbered painting outside in Houston. An experienced landscape painter told me one time you had to be a good sport to be a landscape painter. I can contest that this is a true statement what with flies, heat, mosquitos, stinging bees, snakes and unfriendly dogs… However, I don’t know when I have had a better time!

Yellow Flowering Lilly Pads

As the month wore on other things came out besides the snakes. Happily one of them was the blooming of the Lilly pads. Although the flowers were quite small, their cute little button shapes dotted across the surface of the water. Compositionally I realized how important the Lilly pads are for an artist. They move your eye through the bottom half of the painting, breaking the surface. In the morning as well as at dusk you will often see a pink glow above the trees which becomes more noticeable when reflected in the water. Pink, green, and yellow; a charming combination don’t you think?
