Red and Wild!

Red and Wild!

Available at Harris Gallery, Houston

Gallery Paintings

” Red and Wild! ” is another gallery size painting I did in anticipation of Valentine’s. I used flowers in all shades of red; roses, peonies, and hydrangeas. Often it is fun to explore the many variations of a single color. The shapes are different but the color holds it together as a unit. The green leaves ( red’s compliment ) surround the red shape to further that idea of a single diagonal across the canvas suggesting movement. A friend once told me a quote by the famous designer ,Valentino. ” A room without a touch of red is like a women without lipstick! “

Valentine Bouquet

There are so many beautiful different flowers available this time of year, I thought I’d do something besides red roses. Ranunculus and anemones are some of my favorite Spring flowers and they make a charming nosegay. As a matter of fact, I use to plant them every year and then watch the squirrels dig up the bulbs and eat them. So when a few did bloom I was thrilled! You can not even buy them except this time of year, so really they are very special. So make someone feel special and give Ranunculus for Valentine’s!

Yellow Roses in a Blue Vase

Yellow Roses in a Blue Vase

Available at Harris Gallery, Houston

Gallery Paintings

“Yellow Roses in a Blue Vase” is a 20″x24″ painting I am doing for my upcoming show at Harris Gallery, hopefully at the end of this year. I have always been attracted to the combination of yellow and blue, but wanted to throw in a little red so we could have all the “compliments” in one painting. Often, for a large gallery painting I try to think in terms of color themes. I was also interested in movement, from the roses to the lemons and then across to the red apple and back up to the silver tea service thus pulling your eye in two X’s diagonally across the painting. I added the yellow drape on the right to make the yellow shapes of the roses and lemons not the same size. However, I think I might move that back yellow drape further into the picture plane. What do you think? I would love to hear!
