Pet Portraits

This portrait of a copper-eyed Persian cat is another example of my pet portraits, however I photographed this cool cat myself. I’m sure Lori Brewer, the professional pet photographer I am now using, would have done a better job, but this cool cat was living with us at the time so I just took my chances. I particularly love to paint hair and a Persian has a lot of that! All white and all black animals are a unique challenge to paint because they can quickly become boring if you don’t try to find other colors within an all one color pallet. Note all the colors I used to describe this cat. Contrary to what you might think, the more colors you use the more realistic the image appears. Nature is very colorful!

Painting on the Street

Plein air painting in a city is full of challenges. First, try not to get hit by a car, or knocked down by the crowd, or get gassed by buses. All these difficulties were present the morning I painted this little painting of the view from the San Miguel main bus stop, but what can you do? The sun was just coming up behind these incredible colorful church spires… I couldn’t just walk away from such beauty, could I?

Old Mining Town of Pozos

One summer day an old friend and her husband invited us to paint with them in Pozos, which is 25 miles from San Miguel. This once opulent colonial town lived through several gold bonanzas from 1576 through the Mexican Revolution of 1910. There are still many beautiful old ruins from it’s former day’s of glory. Today many gringos are building homes in Pozos and we painted in this garden complete with lavender fields. As a matter of fact, lavender grows quite well in this cool mountain desert and is starting to be grown commercially.
This little painting, which I did that day, was a natural combination of complimentary colors. What could be better than purple and yellow to give zing to your painting!

The Miracle of Attention and Focus

Robert Glenn is an artist, writer and teacher who recently wrote an article about the power of focus in painting. He suggested the artist give herself only one hour to start and finish a painting, sooo I decided to take his challenge to my painting class. Apart from producing many beautiful underworked paintings, the exercise demonstrated the power of full attention and unwavering focus. The mind quickens and so does the spirit! Learning to focus and pay attention has been identified as a primary key to the development of human effectiveness. “Turquoise and Orange” is one of my hour paintings.

To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To fill the hour- that is happiness.”
