Pastel Study of a Mission

Atotonilco is an extraordinary church that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However,it is still in sad need of repair and the grounds around it are full of trash. As a matter of fact, the World Monuments Watch has listed it as one of 100 most endangered sites. The ruins are beautiful however, as are the many white and cream domes rising around them so, I have gone for 4 years to paint here. Atotonilco means hot water, and there are numerous pools of thermal waters in the area. The church is about 15 miles from San Miguel. This year, since I have painted it so often, I decided to experiment with the reflective light and make the colors more pastel. Also, I was thinking of a divine light falling on this beautiful place to save it for future generations.

Got to Paint Them!

I can’t help it. I’m a sucker for roses! However I don’t know if you have noticed, but I have been experimenting with different approaches as to how I paint them. Sometimes I use a big brush and they are more expressive and sometimes, more realistic. This bouquet is somewhere in between. I started with a toned canvas and while using a big brush, did get some detail. I particularly like the lone yellow bud, which leads you diagonally across the canvas.

Portrait of Krug…as a puppy

This portrait is a departure for me from painting people WITH their animals to painting just animals and a happy partnership with a very talented photographer; Lori Brewer. Lori’s specialty is pet portraits although she also does beautiful portraits of people too! I do not know how to work with dogs but can sure paint them, so we will be working to give you the best possible piece of art that just happens to be of your pet.

Krug, is the very pampered pet of Clair Amonett; the proprietress of the charming store” Gone to the Dogs…and Cats too, on San Felipe near Kirby. The store is a delightful cornucopia of unique items and well thought out gifts for a fashionable pet owner’s home. They also carry hand made couture for your pet, as well as organic toys, custom dog beds in rich fabrics, and cat condo’s for your feline friends. Lori and I hope you will visit Clair’s store to see examples of our work displayed there too.
